2017 Carrera Estate Blend
Exuberant, sexy, and alluring, featuring flavors of blueberries, dark cherries and violet.
The 2017 Carrera Estate Blend is, as always, highly anticipated by many of our Wine Club members who always want more of this blend than we can make. The wine gets its name from the Spanish word for “race,” a nod to Dann Boeschen’s passion for vintage car racing. The Carrera name became more widely recognized thanks to the Carrera Panamericana, a sports car racing event held on open roads in Mexico during the 1950’s. The race was widely considered by contemporaries as the most dangerous race of any type in the world and has since been resurrected as a classic road rally.
100% of the grapes in the 2017 Carrera come from the Boeschen Vineyards seven-acre estate vineyard in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Our Wine Club members know that the Boeschen Vineyards Carrera blend varies from year to year, reflecting the strengths and unique characteristics of each vintage from our estate vineyard. In 2017, a higher quantity of our Cabernet Sauvignon joined our heritage Merlot, the oldest vines on the property, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to produce a rich, seamless blend.
The primary fruit flavors and integrated tannins of the 2017 Carrera are a direct result of the even growing conditions during that vintage. The winemaking approach is Old-World, focusing foremost on balance and complexity. The winery utilized gravity and gentle processing (pre- and post-destemmer sorting, no must pump, gravity barrel filling) to maintain a high percentage of whole berry character during fermentation. Blending was delayed as long as possible so as to allow for maximum maturity in the barrel before combining lots. The wine was given extended aging time in bottle, resulting in an extremely soft and luscious wine.
The Carrera 2017 features the richness and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot with the softness and beauty of our Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Acid, alcohol, fruit, tannins, and oak are all integrated in a way that shows off the strength of the estate vineyard. The wine is exuberant, sexy, and alluring, featuring flavors of blueberries, dark cherries and violet, and a long, lingering finish. The tannins are silky and smooth, a hallmark of this beautiful vintage. It is a seductive, complete wine from a wonderfully expressive vintage.

Boeschen Vineyards is a very small family-owned vineyard and winery committed to making world-class estate wines. We founded Boeschen Vineyards in 1999, but completion of the underground winery in 2006 was an important milestone. This year we are happy to celebrate 15 years of estate winemaking. We run the business, make the wine, perform 100% of the cellar work and farm our 11-acre estate vineyard. We are guided by commitment to our family, the wines we craft, the community we live in and the environment that sustains us.
Dann designed our unique underground winery, and his imaginative flair is evident throughout the facility. We are proud of the craftsmanship used in its creation, and the state-of-the-art technology employed to make our wines. One visitor remarked that, for such a limited production of wine, we may have the finest facility in all of Napa Valley. Our upcoming release, the 2017 Winchester Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, reflects the attention to detail and quality that come with working very closely with an extremely small amount of wine.
The winery also reflects our commitment to the environment. In 2008, we added to our sustainable efforts by becoming only the ninth winery in Napa Valley to complete the county's Green Certified Winery Program, designed to promote sustainable practices inside the winery. In addition to water and waste conservation practices, we enjoy the energy-saving benefits of an underground facility, and any electricity we use is powered 100% by solar energy. Our 30 kilowatt photovoltaic system saves nearly 60,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every year in energy production. If you reserve a spot in one of our limited tours, a family member will show you the entire facility, but watch out for the electric forklift - it's very quiet.
