SUTRO Wine Co. | StoryWinelight
“ Wine is a window into my soul …”
We are proud to be a small production wine label that is intimately tied to the family land where the grapes are sourced. SUTRO produces 750 cases annually: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Our philosophy of minimal intervention winemaking combined with restrained use of new oak allows the quality of the grapes to shine through the glass. Fruit that we source exclusively from Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard is processed across the street from the vineyard at the pristine and modern Medlock Ames facility where we oversee the process from grape to bottle with the support of consulting winemaker Lisa Bishop Forbes. She brings us 15 years of Chalk Hill Road winemaking experience and we are honored to have her intimacy with the region at the service of SUTRO wines.
Our wines have unique and recurring characteristics due to the strength of the terroir, the sustainable farming practices of Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard, and the minimal input winemaking that we practice in the cellar.
Our red wines perfect the elusive balance of elegance and power. SUTRO Cabernets are a bold ruby red color and known for their dark berry aromas with undertones of savory Provençal herbs and cacao. The body of the wine is held up by our signature razor acidity, a great compliment to powerful tannins.
Our highly sought after micro production of Merlot shows deep garnet hues in the glass and ripe dark fruit aromas accented by rosemary and earthy notes. It is smooth with just enough acidity to liven the flavors. The Sauvignon Blanc is a classic expression of Bordeaux white from the hilly southern end of Alexander Valley: refined tropical and faint floral aromas with lively acidity and minerality.

Renewable energy comes from resources which are naturally replenished like sunlight, wind, rain, and geothermal heat. Wineries earn this tag by using renewable energy to help power their operations.
We highlight women led businesses on our site because most winery owners and winemakers are men. To earn this tag the winery must be majority women owned or have a female winemaker.
Sustainable practices help reduce the impact of farming, manufacturing, and other industries. To earn this tag, wineries or the vineyards they source from are certified by third party organizations.
Starting your own business is hard, especially in the wine industry where there are so many uncontrolled variables. Wineries earn this tag if the current owners and operators are also the founders.
Family owned and operated businesses are an important part of the US economy. To earn this tag, a winery has two or more family members involved, and the majority ownership lies within the family.
